Happ Not Working: What to Do — Every Error on Phone and PC Explained

In short: most often Happ doesn’t work not because of the app itself but because of an outdated server list, a bad server, or a second VPN that’s switched on. Start with three actions: refresh the subscription with the button next to its name, pick another server in the list, and turn off the VPN on your router and in other programs. Didn’t help? Find the exact text of your error below: each one has its own cause and its own fix, and most clear up in a couple of minutes without reinstalling.

The practical steps are below; if you'd rather skip the setup, Tainet connects in a couple of minutes - through the Telegram bot or in your account on this site.

First — four checks to start with

Before looking for your error, go through this list in order. It takes a couple of minutes, and the common causes get filtered out right here.

  1. Refresh the subscription. Tap the round arrow next to the subscription name or pull the server list down. Happ keeps the list for up to a day, while the service’s servers change — an outdated list looks like an app fault.
  2. Switch servers. Pick a line with a different icon, not a neighbouring country with the same one. In a Tainet subscription the icon tells you the route: ⚡ direct, 🛡 via a server in Russia, 🎮 for video and games, ⚪ fallback with a traffic cap. Go from top to bottom.
  3. Check that no VPN is on somewhere else. A connection on the router or a second VPN app on the same device interfere with each other, and both connections drop. Keep one.
  4. Try another network. Mobile internet instead of Wi-Fi or the other way round. If everything works on the other network, the problem is the network, not Happ or the subscription.

If Happ still doesn’t work after that, find your symptom below.

Errors when adding a subscription

”Clipboard is empty”

Happ tries to paste a link from the clipboard, and there’s nothing there: the link wasn’t copied, or something else was copied after it. Copy the subscription link again — in the Telegram bot or your personal account — and paste it right away.

”Subscription URL is not valid” or “Configuration is not valid”

The link was copied with an error: the end got cut off, a space or an extra character got in. Subscription links are long, and some messengers wrap or truncate them when copying. Copy the link again from the bot or the account, not from a forwarded message. The Tainet account has a button that adds the subscription to Happ in one tap — with it there’s nothing to copy at all.

”Timeout when adding subscription”

According to the Happ documentation, the app waits nine seconds for a reply from the subscription address and then gives up. There are three causes: no internet on the device itself, another VPN connection switched on while adding, or the subscription address doesn’t open from your network. Turn off other VPNs, check that the internet works without them, and add the link again. Didn’t help — get a fresh link, covered in the next section.

”Timeout”, “Subscription expired” or an empty list although the subscription is paid

How to recognise it: the subscription is active in your account, but Happ shows “Timeout”, “Subscription expired” or an empty server list. Refreshing the list and re-adding the same link change nothing.

The cause is the link itself: it points to an address that no longer opens from your network, so the app has nothing to refresh the list from. The link needs replacing with a fresh one — reinstalling Happ is pointless:

  1. Get a fresh subscription link — in the Telegram bot or your personal account. The account opens in a regular browser, so the link is available even with no connection.
  2. In Happ, delete the old subscription: the three dots ”…” next to its name → “Delete”.
  3. Tap ”+” and paste the new link. The server list appears straight away — pick a line with the 🛡 icon and connect.

Why a subscription, a key and a config are the same thing, and why the link doesn’t change when you pay, is covered in what a VPN key is.

Errors when connecting

TLS handshake error, timeout, context deadline exceeded

All three mean the same thing: the connection to the server wasn’t established. It’s almost always the network, not the subscription — the same key usually works on another network. In order:

  1. Check the date and time on the device — set them to “automatic”. A wrong clock breaks certificate checks, and the TLS handshake fails.
  2. Refresh the subscription and switch servers — the handshake may fail on the route to a specific server.
  3. Try the 🎮 line — it’s a different protocol, Hysteria2, with its own path to the server.
  4. Check on another network. If there’s no error on mobile internet but there is on Wi-Fi, it’s the network.

”Xray core critical error”, JSON parse error, “core start error EOF”

Xray is the engine inside Happ that creates the connection. A core error is about the app itself, not the keys:

  1. Update Happ to the latest version. Config formats change over time, and an old core doesn’t understand a fresh subscription. Turn off the VPN while updating — the app needs to download the new core.
  2. Turn off Noise and Fragment — in both the app settings and the subscription’s own properties: tap it and open its parameters. These settings add extra packets to the connection, and Tainet servers don’t need them.
  3. Delete the subscription and add it again. If you set up your own routes or a non-standard DNS, turn them off for now.

An error marked EOF is from the same family: something broke at startup. Start by restarting the app and re-creating the subscription. If Happ closes right after launch, the installation is damaged — reinstall it: the subscription isn’t lost, you’ll add the link again in a minute.

”n/a” instead of ping

Happ couldn’t measure the latency to the server — the test connection didn’t get through at that moment. The server itself may still work: the real test is connecting, not the number in the list. If every server shows “n/a”, refresh the subscription and check that it’s active.

The server list is empty

The link was added, but the content didn’t load. Refresh the subscription; if it’s still empty, check in your account whether the subscription is active, and see the “Timeout” section above: the link may be outdated.

Connected but not working

The icon is on, but websites don’t open

  1. Pick another line in the list and restart the app — close it from the list of running apps, don’t just minimise it.
  2. Refresh the subscription.
  3. Check that a VPN isn’t on at the same time on the router or in another app — a common cause.
  4. On iPhone — delete the VPN profile in Settings → General → VPN & Device Management and connect again from Happ.
  5. On a computer — remove proxy extensions from your browser: they intercept traffic and conflict with Happ.

After updating Happ, some websites stopped opening

There’s a connection, pings are normal, some apps work, but some websites don’t respond at all — and trying other servers, countries and DNS changes nothing. If it started right after a Happ update, the cause is the app, not the server. The check is simple: open the same subscription link in another client — for example, in INCY. If it works there, reinstall Happ and add the subscription again. Changing server, country and protocol is pointless in this case.

Switched servers, but nothing changed

Most apps remember the address they started with and hold the connection until a full restart. The new server already works — just close the app in question from the list of running apps and open it again. Check your address with a foreign service such as 2ip.io: with routing rules on, Russian websites go directly by design, and your address on them stays the same.

Tainet — a subscription that works in any client in this table: copy the link, paste it, connect. Signing up takes 30 seconds in the Telegram bot or in your account on this site, the first 7 days are free, then from $0.10 a day — enough to try the clients out and settle on the one you like.

Happ disconnects on its own

The connection comes up, works for a few minutes and drops. Check from the most common to the rarest:

  1. A second connection. A VPN on the router or in another program at the same time as Happ — the connections drop in turn. Keep one.
  2. Server type. On direct ⚡ lines, some mobile carriers drop the connection after a few minutes. Switch to 🛡, or 🎮 for games and video.
  3. Battery saving. Android and iPhone put the app to sleep in the background. On Android: Settings → Apps → Happ → Battery → “Unrestricted”, and allow background activity; on Samsung and Huawei, also remove Happ from the “sleeping apps” list.
  4. Three settings in Happ itself. Settings → Dev Settings → “Xray memory limit”: the app itself says the limit should be lowered if connections drop often. In the same place, “Disconnect when going to sleep” — turn it off. And Settings → On Demand: if a rule is on, the tunnel goes up and down depending on the network, and that looks like a spontaneous drop.
  5. Noise and Fragment. With them Happ sometimes loses the connection — turn both off.

None of it helped — test the same link in another client. If the connection holds there, the problem is Happ on this device.

Happ not working on a computer

Happ for Windows and Mac has its own failures that phones don’t. Briefly here, in detail in the separate guide Happ on a Windows or Mac computer.

Happ service unavailable, TUN mode won’t start

TUN mode sends the whole computer through the connection, and for that Happ installs a background service and creates a virtual network card. If the service doesn’t start, TUN won’t turn on. In order: update Happ — September 2026 brought several fixes specifically for the service, and since version 4.4.8 it restarts itself after a crash and shows an error code; use the Reset service action; add the Happ folder to your antivirus exclusions; turn off other VPN programs; reinstall Happ. Need to connect right now — switch the mode to proxy, and the browser works immediately.

Works in the browser, but games and other programs don’t

Happ is running in proxy mode, and only programs that follow the system proxy go through it — mostly browsers. Switch the mode to TUN on the main screen.

Connected after laptop sleep, but no internet

Update Happ — fixes for exactly this case came in versions 4.4.6 and 4.4.8. If it keeps happening: quit Happ and shut Windows down completely — Start → Shut down while holding Shift. If that doesn’t help either, reset networking with netsh winsock reset and netsh int ip reset in Command Prompt as administrator and restart the computer.

Happ won’t run on Windows 7 or an old macOS

Current Happ needs Windows 10 build 1809 or Windows 11, and macOS 13 or later. On older systems it won’t start, and the old Legacy version may fail to connect to modern servers. The reliable way out is a connection on your router: then the old computer works through it with no app.

Happ not working on iPhone

First check that it’s the real Happ. Genuine Happ of any edition is published by Flyfrog LLC — you can see it on the app page. In the Russian App Store, as of September 2026, the official app is called Happ Lite; searching for “happ” also finds other apps with similar names, and “downloaded it, doesn’t work” often means one of those.

Then the usual order: refresh the subscription, switch servers, and if the connection hangs, delete the VPN profile in iPhone settings and connect again from the app. If the official Happ isn’t in the store at the moment, the same subscription link works in INCY.

Free Happ keys stopped working

A noticeable share of “happ not working” cases are dead free keys from chats. Hundreds of people share one link, the server can’t cope, the key gets switched off — and Happ honestly shows there’s nothing to connect to. The app has nothing to do with it, and no setting will bring it back.

The fix is a subscription of your own. With Tainet it takes a minute in the Telegram bot or in your personal account on this site: the trial period is free, then from 8 ₽ a day. One link works on your phone, computer and TV, and the server list refreshes itself. How to add it to the app from scratch — step-by-step Happ setup for iPhone and Android.

When to write to support

If no section helped, write to us — via a request in your personal account. To sort it out from the first message, include:

  • a screenshot with the exact error text — the exact wording points to the cause straight away;
  • the Happ version (it’s in the app settings) and the device: phone, Windows, Mac, TV;
  • which servers you tried and on which network — home Wi-Fi or mobile internet;
  • on a computer — the service error code, if Happ showed one.

An honest caveat: we help with Tainet subscriptions; we can’t fix other people’s keys or subscriptions from our side. General diagnostics for any app and network are in why a VPN is not working.

FAQ

Why did Happ stop working when it was fine yesterday?

Most often the server list is out of date: Happ keeps it for up to a day, and the service’s servers change. Refresh the subscription with the button next to its name and pick a server again. Didn’t help — switch to a line with a different icon and try another network.

Do I need to reinstall Happ if it won’t connect?

Usually not. Reinstalling only helps with core errors, crashes on launch and failures after an app update. If the subscription link is outdated, reinstalling with the same link changes nothing — you need a fresh link from the bot or the account.

What’s the difference between “update the app” and “refresh the subscription”?

Updating the app means installing a new Happ version from the store or the developer’s site; it fixes core errors and crashes. Refreshing the subscription is a button inside Happ next to the subscription name; it reloads the server list and fixes empty lists and “it worked yesterday”. To avoid doing it by hand, Happ’s subscription settings have auto-update.

How do I refresh the subscription if the internet doesn’t work?

The subscription link is always available in your personal account: it opens in a regular browser with no connection. Copy the link there and add it to Happ with ”+”.

What if Happ doesn’t work only on mobile internet?

Switch to a server with the 🛡 icon — the route via a server in Russia is most often what mobile internet needs. If it doesn’t help, try 🎮 or ⚪.

If Happ isn't working because of the key rather than the app, get your own subscription: with Tainet the link is added to Happ with a button from the connection guide, and the server list refreshes itself. Get it in the Telegram bot or in your personal account on this site: the trial period is free, then from 8 ₽ a day. Error won't go away — write to us with a screenshot, real people answer.
